Stacey Abrams stated on Tuesday that recent Democratic victories in Georgia offer a distinct chance to reverse decades of voter suppression. Speaking to NPR's Michel Martin, Abrams described the wins as a path to "correcting and restoring rights that we've seen lost across the South for more than 20 years."

The party secured control of four major offices in the state's midterm elections. Keisha Lance Bottoms became the first Black woman elected governor of Georgia and the first Democrat to hold the position in over two decades. Incumbent U.S. Sen. Jon Osoff retained his seat after defeating Republican Rep. Mike Collins. Democrats also took the attorney general and secretary of state positions along with the state house.

Abrams, who ran for governor in 2018 and 2022, founded Fair Fight Action to address voting barriers. She explained that her efforts have focused on rebuilding party infrastructure and restoring public trust. Abrams noted that this process requires time and consistency across multiple election cycles.

The former candidate expressed gratitude that the focus on combating voter suppression yielded tangible results. She said the outcome signals that sustained conversation and consistent action can produce measurable political change in the state.

The interview aired on NPR and was edited by Olivia Hampton for radio and Treye Green for digital distribution. The discussion took place following the confirmation of election results in the state.
