The 39th District Court seat covering Roseville and Fraser has changed hands after a general election that pitted a private practitioner against a county prosecutor.

Dana Freers, a Fraser resident, secured the victory on Tuesday with 11,433 votes. Her opponent, Derek Boedeker, received 8,987 votes. The margin of victory was 2,446 votes, giving Freers a six-year term on the bench.

The race to fill this vacancy began with the retirement of Judge Joseph Boedeker. He is the father of the defeated candidate. The court serves the communities of Roseville and Fraser.

Freers, 47, is a Macomb County native and graduate of Cousino High School in Warren. She has practiced law for two decades and serves on the board of directors for Macomb County Community Mental Health. She is also active in the Fraser Lions Club, the Fraser First Booster Club, and the Roseville Optimist Club. She is married to Patrick O’Dell, the Fraser Mayor Pro Tem.

Boedeker, 33, is an assistant prosecutor for Macomb County. He was raised in Roseville and currently resides in Fraser. In a social media post on Wednesday morning, he thanked supporters, judges, and elected officials who endorsed his campaign. He stated that his commitment to the community and the pursuit of justice would remain constant.

Freers could not be reached for comment the morning after the election. She previously told C&G Newspapers in a questionnaire that she had lived in and served the community for 21 years and was prepared to handle every type of case that comes before a district court judge.
