Singapore Airlines is committing more than S$2 billion, or $1.6 billion, to upgrade its premium seating, dining, and entertainment systems. The carrier announced the capital expenditure plan on Wednesday to maintain its competitive position against global rivals. The investment focuses primarily on long-haul routes served by its Airbus A350 fleet.
The new A350 interiors will feature distinct upgrades for first and business class passengers. First-class seats will include 32-inch 4K high-definition screens and Bang and Olufsen noise-cancelling headphones. Passengers in this cabin will have the option to book double bed configurations or face-to-face dining setups. Business class seats will be equipped with 22-inch 4K monitors, wireless charging pads, and Bluetooth audio connectivity.
The decision to prioritize the Airbus aircraft stems from persistent delays in the delivery of Boeing 777-9 planes. Boeing stated in its third-quarter earnings report that the first 777-9 deliveries will not occur until 2027. Singapore Airlines Chief Operating Officer Tan Kai Ping described the program as a long-delayed project during a May briefing. He noted the aircraft will not enter the fleet in the financial year ending March 2027. Tan added that the carrier hopes the planes arrive in the following fiscal year.
Lee Lik Hsin, the airline's Chief Commercial Officer, confirmed at a media briefing on Nov 4 that the A350 retrofit was necessitated by the Boeing timeline. The new products will also debut on the 777-9 aircraft once they are delivered. Other cabin classes will receive minor updates, including an extra inch of reclining space in premium economy and new upholstery in economy. These lower-tier upgrades are limited to the incoming 777-9 fleet, which will also feature new 4K seatback entertainment monitors.
The airline recently secured the Skytrax award for World's Best Airline for 2026 and the title for World's Best Economy Class. It did not win awards in the business or first-class categories, losing those distinctions to Qatar Airways and Air France, respectively. The physical upgrades accompany earlier announcements regarding onboard connectivity and dining. Singapore Airlines will begin installing Starlink on its Airbus fleet, excluding the medium-haul A350 variant, starting in the first quarter of 2027.
The carrier also introduced new inflight dining menus and Christofle serviceware for premium cabins in September. New amenity kits from Sisley and BYREDO will be provided for first and business class travelers, respectively. Sleepwear will be available for business class passengers for the first time. A separate S$130 million investment will renovate the airline's Silverkris lounges and expand ground services at Singapore Changi Airport for top-tier customers.
