Eric Sorensen retained his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives for Illinois’ 17th Congressional District.
The Associated Press called the race for Sorensen at 8:48 p.m. Tuesday. At that point, 47% of ballots had been counted. Sorensen led with 75,536 votes against 49,912 for Dillan Vancil. By early Wednesday morning, with 92% of votes tallied, Sorensen held a lead with 60% of the total vote.
Sorensen has represented the district since 2023. He serves on the House Agriculture and Armed Services committees. Before entering politics, he worked as a television meteorologist in central and northwestern Illinois for more than 20 years.
Vancil, a Republican from Henderson County, conceded the loss in a Facebook post Wednesday. He described the campaign as one of the greatest honors of his life. Vancil noted that he learned by doing, such as knocking on doors and sitting at kitchen tables. He stated that he will continue working for the communities he cares about. Vancil founded Dame Fine Coffee and has served on the West Central School District 235 board since 2021.
Sorensen thanked volunteers for their efforts in a Wednesday morning post. He cited concerns from neighbors about high diesel prices and prescription costs. Sorensen said he would work to lower costs and hold politicians accountable. He emphasized that these goals are not strictly partisan. He listed Rockford, Rock Falls, Rock Island, Peoria, and Bloomington-Normal as communities that expect results from their leaders.
The 17th District covers central and northwestern Illinois. It includes all of Carroll, Rock Island, Whiteside, and Knox counties. It also includes parts of Mercer, Stephenson, Tazewell, McLean, Fulton, Peoria, Henry, Warren, and McDonough counties. The district is anchored by Rockford to the north and Bloomington-Normal to the south. It contains Peoria and the Illinois side of the Quad-City region, which comprises Rock Island, Moline, and East Moline.
