Harry Kane is the betting favorite to win the 2026 Ballon d'Or, with bookmakers assigning him a 70 percent probability of victory. The award will be announced at the London Palladium in less than 24 hours.

The race has narrowed to three main contenders: Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappe, and Kane. Yamal and Mbappe have publicly campaigned for the prize, while Kane has remained more reserved in his support.

Forecasts diverge sharply between traditional betting markets and algorithmic models. Avisia, a French data analysis firm, rates Yamal as the leading candidate at 23 percent for the 2025-26 season. Kane follows at 21 percent, with Mbappe at 19 percent, tied with 2024 winner Rodri. Lionel Messi rounds out the top five at 18 percent, seeking a record-extending ninth title. Avisia notes it correctly predicted the top five for the 2025 award, which Ousmane Dembele won.

Player opinions are split. Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone supports Messi, who recently retired from international duty, stating, "After the World Cup, he played at his age… No doubt about it." Jude Bellingham backs Kane, calling him a "very honest and hard-working person." Anthony Gordon favors Yamal, describing his teammate as "on a whole other level." Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni supports Mbappe, citing an incredible season.

Statistical cases vary by player. Mbappe topped La Liga with 25 goals and the Champions League with 15, while also setting a World Cup record with 12 goals. Kane scored 73 goals last season, the highest total by any player since Messi's 82 in 2011-12.

Team success complicates the individual narratives. Mbappe won no major trophies with club or country. Kane won the Bundesliga but finished third at the World Cup. Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona, despite injury affecting his personal numbers. Only four of the previous 19 winners failed to claim a major international or club trophy in their award year.

If Yamal wins, he becomes the youngest recipient in history, surpassing Brazil's Ronaldo, who was 21 when he won in 1997.
