Saquon Barkley returned to the Philadelphia Eagles lineup on Monday night, completing nine offensive snaps for 62 rushing yards and a touchdown in a 38-21 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The veteran running back also caught two passes for nine yards, touching the ball on every play he participated in during the contest.
Barkley entered the game with a questionable status after a hamstring injury kept him out for the previous two weeks. The Eagles managed his workload carefully, reducing his carries as the game progressed. He recorded seven rushes for 62 yards and a score, along with two receptions for nine yards.
The running back's performance marked a rare statistical occurrence in the modern league. He is the first NFL starter in the past 20 seasons to play at least nine offensive snaps in a single game while touching the ball on all of them. His most recent snap came in the third quarter, after which he did not return to the field.
Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni emphasized the medical team's role in the decision to activate Barkley. The coach stated that the player felt ready and that the doctors and trainers confirmed his status. Sirianni noted that Barkley's toughness would have driven him to play every down, so the staff had to intervene to keep a close eye on his condition.
Barkley managed physical discomfort throughout the game, spending time in the medical tent and stretching on the bench. He tweaked his back during a 29-yard run in the first quarter, and the issue worsened as the game continued. Immediately after scoring an 8-yard touchdown on the first offensive possession, he moved to the sideline to use an exercise bike.
The injury to Barkley's back created a gap in the Eagles' rushing attack. The team has already lost Will Shipley to a foot injury, Tank Bigsby to an abdominal issue, and Carson Steele to a shoulder problem. All three are on injured reserve. Dameon Pierce exited the game in the fourth quarter with an undisclosed injury, forcing rookie Elijah Mitchell to handle the remaining running duties.
Barkley said he did not believe the back issue would sideline him going forward, though he deferred to the training staff for the final decision. He described the situation as difficult for leadership, noting that his body was not responding as he wanted despite his effort to push its limits.
