Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes and manager Michael Carrick held a private meeting on Tuesday to resolve a public disagreement over the team’s tactical approach. The discussion took place at the Carrington training base before the squad’s morning session. The meeting was described as a clear-the-air conversation intended to settle the friction that arose following Fernandes’ recent criticism of the manager’s methods.
Fernandes, who is 32 years old, told Carrick that he remains fully committed to the project. He expressed a strong desire to turn the team’s season around. The manager subsequently addressed the full squad in a group meeting. During that session, the rest of the players made similar assurances regarding their dedication to improving results under Carrick’s leadership.
The meeting occurred while Carrick’s position remained uncertain due to poor results. He had dropped Fernandes from the starting lineup for Sunday’s 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth. That omission was a direct response to comments Fernandes made the previous week. After a 4-1 loss at Como on Wednesday, the captain questioned the team's strategy. He stated, “It’s a decision from the staff to not press man-to-man.” This remark was interpreted as a direct challenge to Carrick’s tactical authority.
Director of football Jason Wilcox has decided to give Carrick more time in charge. The 45-year-old manager will retain his job for the upcoming match against Chelsea on Saturday. This decision provides a short-term reprieve, though long-term security depends on winning matches. With Fernandes now available, the team has a considerable boost for the next fixture. The return of their best player is expected to influence the squad's performance immediately.
United’s record this season has been difficult to sustain. The team has won only two of their last 12 games. They were also eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Brighton. Currently, United sit in 16th place in the Premier League. They are one point above the relegation zone. The next few weeks present a tight schedule that will test the new dynamic.
United will host Roma in the Champions League three days after their Chelsea match. They will then face Aston Villa in the league the following Sunday. A two-week international break will follow, offering the board a longer period to assess the situation. Carrick’s continued presence may also allow Wilcox time to secure a replacement if the decision to change managers is made. Wilcox favors Eddie Howe, the former Newcastle manager, as his prime candidate. Christopher Vivell, the head of recruitment, prefers Julian Nagelsmann, the former Germany head coach.
Kobbie Mainoo returned to training on Wednesday morning. He had missed the previous four games due to injury. His availability adds depth to the squad as they prepare for the upcoming fixtures.
