Oberlin College professor Pipo Nguyen-Duy was found dead at a Lorain County home on Tuesday morning. A suspect, identified as Daniel Jones, 31, of Ashland, Oregon, is currently in police custody.

The incident began around 8:57 a.m. when Oberlin Police responded to the Oberlin College Conservatory lot. Officers assisted fire crews with a vehicle that was smoking and potentially on fire. The registered owner of the vehicle was Jones.

Police attempted to locate Jones for a welfare check. They found him at 10:19 a.m. in the 200 block of Shipherd Circle. Officers subsequently took him into custody.

During the welfare check, officers went to 33 South Pleasant Street to check on Jones’ family. They discovered two victims inside the house, both deceased from gunshot wounds. The man was located on the first floor, and the woman was found on the second floor.

Oberlin College and Conservatory confirmed that the man was Nguyen-Duy, a studio art and photography professor who had taught at the institution for many years. The school issued a shelter-in-place order while police assessed the situation. The order was lifted after officials determined the campus was safe.

Charges against Jones are pending as the investigation continues. The Lorain County coroner’s office and multiple police units are managing the case.
