An Oberlin College professor and a woman were found with fatal gunshot wounds inside a residence on Wednesday morning. The discovery occurred in the 200 block of Shipherd Circle, where officers located the suspect before moving to a neighboring property to check on his family.
The sequence began around 8:57 a.m. when police responded to the Oberlin College Conservatory lot to assist fire crews with a smoking vehicle. Officers identified the car owner at 10:19 a.m. in the 200 block of Shipherd Circle. The man was taken into custody at that time.
At 10:28 a.m., officers traveled to 33 South Pleasant Street to check on the suspect's relatives. Inside the home, they discovered 64-year-old Pipo Nguyen-Duy on the first floor. A 47-year-old woman was found dead on the second floor. Nguyen-Duy served as a professor of studio art and photography at the college.
Carmen Twillie Ambar, the president of Oberlin College, confirmed the identity of the professor in a statement issued later in the day. She described Nguyen-Duy as a beloved educator who had taught at the institution since 1998. Ambar noted that he was a native of Vietnam who immigrated to the United States as a political refugee in 1975.
The college president stated that police requested a shelter-in-place order for the campus. This precaution was lifted after authorities determined there was no ongoing danger to the community. Ambar also mentioned that mental health resources would be provided to students, faculty, and staff affected by the incident.
Nguyen-Duy was an internationally exhibited artist who held a Guggenheim Fellowship. The statement from Ambar highlighted his long tenure and his status as a cherished colleague on the campus. The incident remains under active investigation by Oberlin police.
