The executive committee of the Garda Representative Association will vote today on whether to adopt a work-to-rule policy for the remainder of Ireland's EU Presidency. The action would limit officers to their standard employment terms, eliminating any additional duties beyond their contracts.

Minister of State for Justice Catherine Ardagh told Newstalk Breakfast that the Government takes the potential vote seriously. She noted that the move would reduce operational flexibility but confirmed that security measures would remain in place.

Ardagh cited a recent GRA survey showing that 92% of respondents were prepared to take industrial action. She stated that the current rosters are designed to meet the specific needs of the EU Presidency, ensuring that fewer officers are not available, but those on duty will work only within their contractual hours.

The Minister added that the Garda Commissioner has already prepared for the possibility of industrial action. He has instructed that officers are not permitted to take leave between November 10 and November 14 to maintain coverage during that period.

Ardagh described the Presidency as successful so far and said the Commissioner remains confident in his force. The GRA vote marks the latest step in the dispute over working conditions as Ireland approaches the final months of its six-month term.
