Jocelyn Benson, Michigan’s next governor, pledged to lower the cost of living in the state’s first 100 days. Speaking at a news conference in Detroit on Wednesday, the incoming official said her administration will prioritize quick relief for residents facing rising everyday expenses.
Benson, currently serving as Michigan’s Secretary of State, stated that the transition team will identify methods to provide immediate economic support. She emphasized that the financial strain on families is a monthly reality that requires prompt action.
"The costs hitting people’s pocketbooks hurt monthly," Benson said. "We cannot wait to get things done. We cannot wait to move the needle."
Her agenda targets three main economic sectors: housing, health care, and energy. Benson said the goal is to make it easier for Michigan residents to afford homes and medical services. She also said she will work with experts and community leaders to connect people with existing resources.
Benson said she intends to collaborate with state legislators from both parties to improve government efficiency. She cited transparency and ethical leadership as core values for her administration. She also noted that improving schools and supporting youth will be central to her policy platform.
The incoming governor will serve with Lieutenant Governor-elect Winnie Brinks. The two women form Michigan’s first all-female gubernatorial ticket, a milestone Benson said they are committed to backing with substantive policy changes. The transition team plans to release a detailed 100-day plan in the coming weeks.
Benson met with outgoing Governor Gretchen Whitmer earlier on Wednesday. She thanked Whitmer for her leadership and friendship during the transition period.
