The Ministry of Defence attributes the high toll to targeted UAV strikes verified by the Delta combat system.

Ukraine’s drone warfare has inflicted substantial losses on Russian forces this year. The Ministry of Defence announced on Monday that Ukrainian units killed or wounded 302,000 Russian soldiers using drones since January 1, 2026.
March recorded the highest monthly casualty count with 33,989 soldiers killed or wounded. February had the lowest count at 26,204. Other months ranged between 27,072 and 33,961, showing consistent high-level attrition throughout the first three quarters.
In the first 25 days of October, the ministry reported an additional 27,829 Russian soldiers killed or wounded. The current total exceeds the figure reported in early August by approximately 90,000 casualties, indicating a sustained rate of loss over the past three months.
The ministry stated that every drone hit is video-recorded in the Delta combat system. These records are then verified by the Brave1 defence innovation cluster to confirm the count.
A ministry spokesperson explained that targeting enemy personnel with drones exhausts Russian human resources and reduces unit combat capability. The strategy also restrains the pace of Russian offensives. By destroying enemy manpower with unmanned aerial vehicles, Ukraine preserves the lives of its own servicemen and makes it harder for Russian forces to approach Ukrainian positions.
Since the start of 2026, Ukrainian defence forces have also intercepted 408,000 Russian drones. This total includes nearly 248,000 aircraft-type drones.
The ministry previously noted that at the beginning of August, the 2026 casualty count stood at approximately 211,600. The new figure represents the cumulative total through October 25.
