The Seattle Seahawks lost their third straight week of consistency on Monday night, falling 34-17 to the Chicago Bears. The result leaves the defending Super Bowl champions with a 4-4 record and snaps a 30-game regular season and postseason streak without a defeat by more than four points. The last time Seattle lost by such a margin was a 30-13 decision against the Green Bay Packers on Dec. 15, 2024.
The team entered this game with high expectations following a 20-3 victory over the previously unbeaten Kansas City Chiefs. Seattle also incorporated three-time All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson into its roster via trade with the Indianapolis Colts. Running backs Jadarian Price and Zach Charbonnet returned from injury during this period, adding depth to an offense that had been performing well.
Despite those additions, the Seahawks struggled to find rhythm against Chicago. The team recorded only 252 total yards of offense and converted just one of 11 third-down attempts. Quarterback Sam Darnold completed 17 of 34 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw an interception that set up the Bears' final score of the game. This marks Darnold's largest margin of defeat this season.
Defensive changes on both sides compounded Seattle's difficulties. The Bears had acquired defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons in a trade the previous week. Simmons recorded a sack, a tackle for loss, six total tackles, and a pass defensed. Seattle offensive tackle Charles Cross was also unavailable due to injury, forcing adjustments on the line.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba remained the Seahawks' primary offensive threat. The AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year caught six passes for 118 yards. His 43-yard touchdown in the first half extended his league-leading receiving totals to 985 yards and nine touchdowns through Week 8. This was his seventh 100-yard receiving game this season.
The running game failed to provide balance. Price and Charbonnet combined for just 52 yards on 16 carries. Offensive guard Grey Zabel, who moved from left to right guard to accommodate Nelson, noted the need for the run game to take pressure off the passing attack. Kicker Jason Myers missed an extra point attempt and had a 33-yard field goal blocked in the fourth quarter.
The Seahawks will host the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. The Cardinals currently hold a 3-5 record. Seattle defensive tackle Leonard Williams suffered a stinger in the fourth quarter of Monday's game and did not return to the field.
