Detroit defeated Minnesota 19-15 on Sunday at Ford Field, ending the Vikings' undefeated season.
The result places the Lions one game behind Minnesota in the NFC North standings. Detroit holds the head-to-head tiebreaker ahead of their next meeting in Minnesota in December.
Jared Goff completed the game-winning pass to Jameson Williams on a crossing route in the fourth quarter. Goff also secured a first down with a quarterback sneak on the final drive. He finished the game with one interception, which was his first of the season, and was sacked four times during the team's first five series.
The ground attack carried the offense in the second half. Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for 153 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown run where he evaded tacklers to reach the end zone. Sione Vaki added 65 rushing yards on 11 carries. Offensive coordinator Drew Petzing relied heavily on the run game after halftime, utilizing both backfielders to manage workload concerns.
Jameson Williams recorded four catches for 70 yards. Amon-Ra St. Brown had seven catches for 46 yards, though a touchdown was overturned after he appeared to fumble the ball while falling. Both receivers drew taunting penalties in the first half. The Lions used Isaac TeSlaa primarily as a blocker and did not target him for passes.
Sam LaPorta caught three passes for 33 yards and blocked effectively on Gibbs' scoring run. Tyler Conklin recorded one catch for 7 yards. The tight end group struggled at times to account for blitzes from Minnesota linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel.
All-Pro tackle Penei Sewell was called for four penalties, including a false start and two holding calls. Cade Mays suffered an ankle injury and was replaced by Juice Scruggs, who started at center.
The defense limited Justin Jefferson to five catches for 33 yards, despite Jefferson scoring on a one-handed catch in the first half. D.J. Reed recorded his first interception of the season in the second quarter. Kyler Murray was pressured consistently, resulting in two solo sacks by Skyler Gill-Howard and Alim McNeill. Aidan Hutchinson forced a turnover on downs in the fourth quarter.
Injuries affected the defense in the fourth quarter. Jack Campbell left the game on a cart with a neck injury, and Jimmy Rolder also exited. Both players had performed well before the incident, with Rolder recording his first career sack. Malcolm Rodriguez, Trevor Nowaske, and Amen Ogbongbemiga stepped in to distribute snaps.
Jake Bates missed a field goal attempt that hit the left upright. He had previously made kicks from 25 and 37 yards. Punter Jack Fox averaged 46.5 yards on four attempts. The Lions face the Miami Dolphins next, with a game against the New England Patriots in Munich to follow.
