Seven cities are currently competing for the right to host the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Final Four at least once between 2032 and 2036. Detroit is one of those finalists, joining Indianapolis, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, New Orleans, Phoenix, and San Antonio in the selection process. The city has previously hosted men's Final Four games, but this bid marks the first attempt to bring the women's championship to Detroit.
Representatives from each of the seven candidate cities will present their proposals to the Division I Women's Basketball Committee in Naples, Florida, in July 2027. The committee will announce the winning city at that gathering. Liz Darger, senior associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at Brigham Young, serves as the chair of the committee. She noted that the high level of interest reflects the championship's standing as a top-tier sporting event.
Darger stated, "The strong interest in hosting the Women's Final Four reflects the championship's stature as one of the premier events in sports, and the committee is grateful to every city that participated in the bid process." The selection will determine which city hosts the event during the specified five-year window.
Detroit is already engaged in major collegiate basketball hosting. The city is preparing for the upcoming men's Final Four, which will take place at Ford Field on April 3 and 5, 2026. Michigan State University has been selected as the official host for that specific event. Ford Field last hosted the men's Final Four in 2009, when Michigan State defeated Connecticut and North Carolina beat Villanova.
