Three men were taken into custody on Monday in Karak governorate, south of Amman. Jordanian security forces arrested the suspects following a dawn shootout. All three men were wounded during the operation, and no members of the security forces were injured.
The attack occurred on Friday in the village of Hammoud. Gunmen opened fire during a funeral at a Greek Orthodox church. Three men were reported to have participated in the incident. Karak is home to a minority Christian population. No claim of responsibility has been made, and no armed group has been accused of the attack.
Mazen Al-Faraya, Jordan's Interior Minister, identified the three men as the ones responsible. He spoke in a phone interview with state TV Al-Mamlaka. He stated that the security services captured those who carried out the act. He noted that the suspects put up fierce resistance before being subdued.
Al-Faraya said the individuals were identified early after the incident. He added that security services used all means at their disposal to apprehend them. The Public Security Directorate said the three had met their just fate. The directorate did not name the suspects or point to links to any Islamist militant groups.
King Abdullah II directed authorities to respond with an iron fist. He called the attackers outlaws of Islam. He urged officials to act against anyone attempting to undermine the unity of the Jordanian people.
