A Joliet man was held in custody Wednesday after being charged with the murder of a 21-year-old Chicago woman at a Walmart in Hammond, Indiana.
Dorian Kevon Robertson, 22, is booked at the Lake County Jail on first-degree murder charges. Hammond Police Captain Steve Kellogg confirmed that Robertson and victim Dakota Norwood had previously dated. The exact duration and specific dynamics of their relationship are still under investigation, Kellogg stated.
The incident began at approximately 9:09 a.m. Monday when an off-duty Hammond police officer working store security alerted dispatchers to a shooting. The officer reported that a suspect had already been taken into custody at the store located at 1100 S. 5th Ave.
Norwood was on the job when a conversation with Robertson turned into a physical fight. During the altercation, Robertson allegedly pulled a firearm and fired multiple shots at Norwood. She was pronounced dead at 10:27 a.m. on Monday.
The Lake County coroner’s office ruled Norwood’s death a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds. An autopsy confirmed the cause of death, and Robertson remains in the jail as the investigation continues.
