ESPN Colts reporter Stephen Holder told the Ride with JMV on Tuesday that the Indianapolis Colts have positioned quarterback Daniel Jones for failure. The comments followed the team's 42-7 defeat in Jacksonville, a result that intensified scrutiny of head coach Shane Steichen.

Holder noted that Jones performed well early in the previous season when the offense was functional. He cited contributions from Alec Pierce, Josh Downs, Tyler Warren, and Michael Pittman as key factors in that success. The current roster lacks that same level of production, leaving Jones to carry the offense alone.

"He only succeeds in optimum situations," Holder said. He clarified that he is not absolving Jones of responsibility for his recent play. The quarterback is playing poorly, according to Holder, but the organization has asked too much of him given the personnel around him.

The debate over Steichen's future has gained traction after the loss. Host JMV described the defeat as more embarrassing than the previous loss to Tennessee that led to Chris Ballard's departure. Holder countered that firing Steichen now would satisfy fans for approximately 24 hours without solving the underlying structural issues.

Holder pointed to recent trades of key veterans as evidence that the front office has already set a direction for the rebuild. He expects running back Jonathan Taylor to be traded as well. The organization is likely to ride out the season and make final decisions in January, a timeframe Holder believes is more practical than an immediate firing.

Receiver Josh Downs also drew attention for his handling of a trade request. Holder said that while players should want fair compensation, Downs' public request may have damaged his market value. Outside teams now view a player who is not producing, potentially reducing his worth compared to what the Colts might have paid this offseason.

Holder stated that Downs' value is not what the player thinks it is. The discussion highlighted the tension between fan desire for immediate changes and the strategic long-term planning of the front office.
