Students and staff at the University of Illinois Chicago were instructed to stay away from the Student Center East Tower on Wednesday afternoon. The closure followed a reported police activity that began around 12:40 p.m. on the second floor of the building located at 750 S. Halsted Street.

The university confirmed that police were investigating an attempted stabbing involving two UIC students. One of the individuals was arrested and taken into custody. The university noted that the second student was neither stabbed nor injured. Chicago police were present at the scene to assist university officers during the response.

By 1:30 p.m., the school had begun evacuating the building. An alert sent to the campus community stated that authorities were responding and advised people to avoid the area until further notice. A second alert clarified that anyone not on campus should also avoid the vicinity.

The Student Center East remains closed while the investigation continues. The university described the evacuation as a precautionary measure. Officials stated that the area has been secured and that there is no current threat to the campus community.

The incident highlights the procedural response to violent conflicts between students in shared academic spaces. The temporary shutdown of a major student hub affects daily schedules and study habits for thousands of people. The precise details of the confrontation are still under review by law enforcement.
