More than 250,000 licensed early care and education programs are now visible on every for-sale property listing on Redfin's website and mobile apps. The real estate brokerage launched this new tool at the end of September for iOS and Android users. It was developed in partnership with Winnie, a national online marketplace for childcare.
Daryl Fairweather, chief economist at Redfin, stated that home searches often coincide with having a child. He explained that knowing childcare options before committing to a mortgage helps families calculate what they can afford. Fairweather noted that housing and childcare are typically the two largest expenses for many households.
Isabelle Novak, a Redfin spokesperson, confirmed the integration is now live on both desktop and mobile platforms. The feature sits directly next to the existing K-12 school ratings provided by GreatSchools. When scrolling through a property listing, users see a specific option labeled "Preschool & daycare" alongside the "K-12" section.
Selecting the daycare option pulls data from Winnie to display up to five nearby providers. These include licensed center-based, home-based, and school-based programs. The initial view shows the ages each program serves and the distance from the home. Clicking a provider name opens a pop-up with hours of operation, a description, address, language options, and any published parent reviews.
Sara Mauskopf, CEO and co-founder of Winnie, said buyers can click through to the provider's profile for deeper details like tuition rates and available slots. Winnie builds these profiles using public state licensing databases. About a quarter of the 250,000 provider pages have been claimed by the operators, who can then update open space availability as it changes day to day.
Mauskopf emphasized that childcare is a necessity for many young families, not a luxury. She recalled her own experience of scrambling to find care after moving and potentially having a parent step away from work. She said the new feature helps families see if care options exist in quiet rural areas or large metros, identifying spots where care might be scarce.
Redfin's system only shows providers within a 10-mile radius of the property address. If no programs are found within that distance, a message appears noting the lack of nearby options. Mauskopf described these areas as childcare deserts, which can be a dealbreaker for families even if the housing is affordable.
Tuition transparency remains a challenge, with many programs still requiring tours before sharing prices. Mauskopf observed that providers are increasingly posting rates online because families are asking artificial intelligence about costs. She noted that a lot of providers are now willing to list prices, a shift that may soon be reflected in the Redfin integration.
