Scott Harrington received a two-year probation sentence on Monday for larceny, a decision that triggered the immediate start of jury selection for Spencer Krusell.
The case stems from a May incident at a Livonia Plasma Center. Nicholas Hatcher confronted Harrington and Krusell after one of the men allegedly stole her backpack. The confrontation escalated into a stabbing that killed Hatcher.
Felisha Hatcher, the victim's mother, addressed the court through tears before the jury was seated. She expressed frustration with the legal process, specifically regarding the leniency shown to the man accused of starting the chain of events. "And I don’t want to walk away today feeling like a justice system that says it will protect and serve. I want it to do what it says it does," she said.
Hatcher described the outcome as a great injustice. "I’ve always said I think it’s unfair," she stated. "A great injustice through our legal system. Even though he said the chain of events to take place for my son’s murder, he gets to walk away with probation, and I’m baffled and heartbroken."
Hatcher indicated she is not optimistic that Krusell will face substantial punishment. After the jury was selected, the prosecution called several witnesses to the stand.
Court proceedings are scheduled to resume on Tuesday at 9:15 a.m.
