Dallas Mavericks president Masai Ujiri stated on October 28 that the organization believes Kyrie Irving can succeed within their current system. This confidence comes as the team faces a complex decision regarding the 34-year-old guard, who holds a $42.4 million player option for the upcoming season. The Mavericks are currently constructing a roster around 19-year-old Cooper Flagg, the 2025 No. 1 overall pick, while managing the implications of a 15-year age gap between their two primary ball handlers.
Irving joined Dallas in February 2023 via a trade from the Brooklyn Nets. Although he has played only 130 games in a Mavericks uniform, he is now the franchise's longest-serving player following the waiver of Dwight Powell. Powell had served as the team's veteran center for 12 years before his release during the current preseason. Irving's tenure in Texas has coincided with major organizational changes, including the firing of former general manager Nico Harrison and the departure of Anthony Davis, who played in 29 games for Dallas.
The Mavericks' front office, led by Ujiri, aims to establish a winning culture and return to the playoffs for the first time since their 2024 NBA Finals appearance. Ujiri, who won a title with the Toronto Raptors in 2019, cited his curiosity about the pairing of Irving and Flagg. He noted that the connection between a point guard and a wing player was a key factor in his previous championship success with Kyle Lowry and Kawhi Leonard.
On the court, the chemistry between the two players is evident. Flagg averaged 21.0 points and 4.5 assists per game during his rookie season, a performance that improved when he was paired with a traditional point guard. In the 2026-27 season opener against the Houston Rockets, Flagg recorded 32 points as Dallas lost 128-110. Following that loss, Kevin Durant noted that Houston's defensive strategy focused heavily on trapping Irving, calling him dangerous despite his 600-day absence from competitive play.
Since returning to the lineup, Irving has been placed on a minutes restriction as a precaution after recovering from a torn left ACL sustained in March 2025. In a recent game against the Indiana Pacers, Flagg left early in the second quarter with a mild left shoulder sprain. However, in a subsequent road win over the Miami Heat, the duo combined for 47 points and 17 assists. Flagg contributed 29 points, six rebounds, 11 assists, five steals, and three blocks in that contest, including a fourth-quarter scoring run and a final-minute block of Andrew Wiggins' shot.
Trade speculation continues to swirl around Irving due to the team's need for draft assets. The Mavericks do not control their own first-round pick for the next four years due to previous transactions. League sources anticipate a strong market for Irving, an eight-time All-Star, should Dallas choose to move him. Ujiri indicated that the organization is open to various scenarios, including sign-and-trade or extend-and-trade deals in the next summer, but emphasized that the current focus is on building a culture under head coach Dusty May.
Irving has expressed comfort with the uncertainty, describing the process as a collaborative effort. He acknowledged the age disparity with Flagg but stated that he aims to alleviate pressure on the younger player. Irving's agent is his stepmother, Shetellia Riley Irving. The guard has maintained that he is in love with the city and the fan base, citing the welcoming atmosphere as a primary reason for his continued interest in staying in Dallas.
The relationship between Irving and Ujiri is characterized by mutual respect. The two have worked together for only a few months but have known each other for years. Ujiri embraced Irving before a recent game, exchanging words of gratitude. The Mavericks' strategy relies on balancing the veteran experience of Irving with the developmental arc of Flagg, with the hope that this combination can drive the team back to postseason contention.
