Midland Claims Top Spot in National Retirement Rankings

Midland, Michigan, is the best place in the United States to retire.

U.S. News and World Report released its 2027 rankings on Tuesday, placing the Midwestern city at the top for the second year in a row. The list evaluates more than 850 cities across the country.

Midland earned the No. 1 position based on high scores in overall affordability and retiree-friendly taxes. The publication noted that these factors allow older adults to maintain financial stability without sacrificing quality of life.

The city is located 20 miles northwest of Saginaw and Bay City. It sits near the Tittabawassee, Chippewa, and Pine rivers. Local amenities include Dow Gardens and Whiting Forest, which features an 110-acre botanical garden and the longest elevated canopy walk in the nation.

Residents also have access to the Chippewa Nature Center, a 1,500-acre area with extensive trails. The city maintains 70 parks covering 2,700 acres of land and hosts the 22-mile Pere Marquette Rail-Trail.

The 2027 index reflects a shift in retiree priorities toward affordability due to rising economic pressures. U.S. News adjusted its scoring weights to prioritize cost of living, causing major changes in the leaderboard. Weirton, West Virginia, moved to the No. 2 spot, while Homosassa Springs, Florida, took No. 3. Paducah, Kentucky, jumped to No. 8.

States with favorable tax codes and low living expenses dominate the top 250 list. Traditional retirement destinations in Florida and Texas hold many high-ranking positions. Notable entries include The Woodlands and Spring in Texas, as well as Palm Coast in Florida.
