Relatives of a Gary woman who died from a gunshot wound in 2025 are questioning the role of her husband in her death. Ron Brewer, a former city councilman, is currently seeking an appointment to a vacant seat on the City Council. The family says Nicole Mabon-Brewer, 47, warned them years before her death that Brewer might kill her and make it look like a suicide.

Nicole Mabon-Brewer was found dead inside her home on Sept. 3, 2025. Her death remains classified as undetermined, and no criminal charges have been filed. Kayla Green, Nicole’s daughter, said her mother told multiple people that Brewer threatened to kill her and use his connections to cover it up. Green stated that her mother later confirmed this threat directly to her.

Green described Brewer as having a temper that she observed while growing up. She said, "Ron has a temper. I’ve witnessed it a lot since I was younger. He’s been in my life since I was a toddler." The family noted that Nicole and Brewer had been together for more than 20 years, but their marriage had deteriorated. They said Nicole was planning to leave the marriage just weeks before she died.

George Mabon, Nicole’s father, said his daughter gave him a similar warning. He recalled her saying, "She said if anything happens to me, Ron did it." Mabon added that she mentioned Brewer telling her he could kill her and get away with it. Green suggested that tensions may have increased after Nicole learned information about Brewer’s private life.

Brewer lost his council seat in May of this year. He is now seeking an appointment to fill a vacant position on the City Council. The family questioned whether Brewer’s alleged connections to the Gary Police Department affected how Nicole’s death was handled. They said they did not feel comfortable bringing their concerns directly to the department.

Brewer has previously faced criminal allegations. In 2019, he pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnapping, confining and intimidating a 14-year-old boy. Police alleged Brewer tracked down a stolen vehicle in East Chicago, fired a gun at teenagers inside, and took the boy to Gary against his will. Court records show the charges were dropped after Brewer completed a six-month diversion program.

The Gary Police Department did not respond to phone and email inquiries from FOX Chicago. Indiana State Police said their investigation into Nicole’s death has been completed and submitted to the special prosecutor assigned to the case. The prosecutor is currently reviewing the investigation. FOX Chicago also repeatedly contacted Brewer and the Gary City Council for comment but did not receive a response. Nicole’s family is urging anyone with information about her death to come forward.

The family continues to seek a closer look at the circumstances surrounding Nicole’s death. They maintain that the timing of her planned departure from the marriage and her specific warnings to her relatives warrant further scrutiny. The legal process is ongoing as the special prosecutor evaluates the state police findings.
