Anthropic Backers Bank Billions Ahead of Record IPO

Early and late-stage investors in the AI giant stand to see massive returns as the company prepares for a public debut at a valuation near two trillion dollars.

A historic public offering for Anthropic is on the horizon, with market watchers expecting a debut this year at a valuation that could reach as high as two trillion dollars. The listing promises to be a significant financial event for the venture capital ecosystem, creating substantial windfalls for both early and later-stage investors. While the final price remains unconfirmed, the potential upside for those holding positions in the leading AI lab is already evident in the current private market data.

Even before the shares go public, the stakes held by prominent venture capital firms and early backers total billions of dollars. At the company’s most recent private valuation of 965 billion dollars, the financial positions of key stakeholders have grown to extraordinary levels. These figures, reported by Bloomberg, highlight the sheer scale of the wealth accumulation surrounding the AI sector’s most prominent players.

Eric Schmidt, the former Google CEO, entered the fray during Anthropic’s Series A round in 2021, when the startup was valued at just 461 million dollars. PitchBook data indicates that Schmidt currently owns approximately one percent of the company. At the latest private valuation, this modest percentage translates into a stake worth nearly ten billion dollars, underscoring the dramatic appreciation of early capital.

Later-stage giants have also seen their portfolios swell. Iconiq invested six billion dollars last year, entering at a valuation of 183 billion dollars. That late-stage bet has since grown to a value of 17 billion dollars, with analysts suggesting it could double again if the IPO proceeds as anticipated. Meanwhile, Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D round, has poured over one billion dollars into the company over time. Their accumulated stake is now valued at 14 billion dollars.

Sequoia, the renowned venture capital firm, made its first move into Anthropic earlier this year when the valuation had already climbed to 380 billion dollars. Their three billion dollar investment secured roughly one percent ownership, meaning the firm has already more than doubled its initial outlay. Sound Ventures, founded by Guy Oseary and Ashton Kutcher, also holds a significant position. They invested 35 million dollars in the 2023 Series C and subsequently added 400 million dollars, resulting in a stake now worth billions. Kutcher departed Sound Ventures this year to launch his own venture capital firm.

Perhaps the most striking return belongs to Spark Capital, the only known venture firm with a board seat at Anthropic. They invested 75 million dollars in the same 2023 Series C round, when the company was valued at five billion dollars. That position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold, reaching a current value of seven billion dollars. As the IPO date approaches, these figures will likely shift, but the trajectory suggests a monumental payout for those who backed the AI leader in its earlier stages.
