The NFL is currently one hundred days away from Super Bowl LXI, a milestone that prompts a comprehensive review of the season. The previous title game, Super Bowl LX, saw the Seattle Seahawks defeat the New England Patriots 29-13. Kenneth Walker III earned Super Bowl MVP, becoming the first running back to win the award since Terrell Davis. The Seahawks also recorded the best point differential among Super Bowl champions since the 1999 Rams. This year, the championship game is scheduled for Sunday, February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
This will be the latest Super Bowl in history, taking place on a Sunday that is followed by Presidents Day. SoFi Stadium is hosting the event for the second time, having previously hosted the 2022 game where the Los Angeles Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals. California will host its fifteenth Super Bowl, trailing only Florida in total count. The broadcast will air on ESPN and ABC, with Joe Buck and Troy Aikman providing commentary for their seventh championship game together.
According to DraftKings Sportsbook odds, the San Francisco 49ers are the favorites to win the Super Bowl at +550. A matchup between the 49ers and the Buffalo Bills is the most favored pairing for the final game. In their respective conferences, the 6-1 Bills are favored to win the AFC East, while the 5-2 Jacksonville Jaguars are heavy favorites in the AFC South. The 6-1 49ers are also favored to win the NFC West, a division that includes the reigning champions.
The race for Most Valuable Player is led by Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, who is favored at +165. Allen has thrown for 1,793 yards and 11 touchdowns, while also rushing for nine scores. He and running back James Cook III are the third duo in NFL history to each score seven rushing touchdowns in the first seven games of a season. Other top candidates include 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, and Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
Burrow has had a recent surge, becoming the first player in NFL history to complete 70 percent of his passes with four touchdowns in three consecutive games. He leads the league in completion percentage and passing yards per game. Meanwhile, Trevor Lawrence entered Week 9 leading the NFL in passer rating, holding the record for the most passing touchdowns by a Jaguars player through eight games. The Kansas City Chiefs, however, face questions about their receiving corps, as Patrick Mahomes has struggled with deep ball efficiency since the Tyreek Hill trade.
In the awards race, Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs is the frontrunner for Offensive Player of the Year, while Houston Texans edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. leads the race for Defensive Player of the Year. For rookie honors, Titans wide receiver Carnell Tate and Giants linebacker Arvell Reese are the favorites. New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh is favored to win Coach of the Year, and Patrick Mahomes is the favorite for Comeback Player of the Year.
Several teams have been major disappointments this season. The Los Angeles Chargers are the most notable, starting 0-7 after making the playoffs last year. Their offense has not scored a touchdown since the third quarter of Week 5. The Los Angeles Rams, despite high expectations, sit at 4-4, with Matthew Stafford not playing at an MVP level and Davante Adams sidelined by injury. The Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles have also struggled, with the Eagles losing six straight games after a 2-0 start, raising questions about head coach Nick Sirianni's future.
The Houston Texans present a unique contradiction. Viewed as a defensive powerhouse similar to last year's Seahawks, the team has seen its defense allow 30 points in three games this season, a significant increase from the previous year. Conversely, the Pittsburgh Steelers have emerged as a contender, winning four straight games and averaging 26.2 points per game over their last six. Aaron Rodgers is on a four-game winning streak, and running back Jaylen Warren has been a standout performer.
Injury updates are also critical to the narrative. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is missing the remainder of the season due to blood clots, a situation the NFLPA is investigating. He had played through a superficial clot in Week 5 before the condition worsened. Other notable storylines include the Minnesota Vikings, who are considering a quarterback change after Kyler Murray's injury, and the Cleveland Browns, one of only four teams that have never appeared in a Super Bowl.
