Flo Meiler holds two world records at age 91. The veteran athlete competes in the pole vault and triple jump, events where she claims the top spot in her age group.

Meiler started her competitive career at age 60. Her friend Barbara Jordan encouraged her to try the long jump at the Vermont Senior Games. Jordan passed away ten years ago. "I miss her so much," Meiler said.

Medals line the walls of the Meiler home in Shelburne. Most are gold. A few are silver. Meiler said she still enjoys the competition despite changes in her performance. "I’m sad that I can’t jump like I used to, but I really enjoy it," she said.

Other runners often approach Meiler after races. She said their words warm her heart. "I really feel really warm inside because I’ve had so many athletes come up to me and say, ‘What an inspiration you have been to me,’” Meiler said. "That’s a wonderful feeling."

University of Vermont freshman Jason Lei cited Meiler as a model for his future. "I want to be moving like you when I’m older as well," Lei told Meiler. The comment made Meiler feel like she was 60 again.

Gene Meiler, Flo’s husband of 65 years, said her drive impressed him. "She’s impressed me, that’s for sure," Gene Meiler said. "That’s why I married her. She impressed me." Flo Meiler said she stays active by adding exercises when she feels her speed dropping. "I’m very happy," she said. "The good Lord has given me my health and my talent."
