High school cadets are trying to fill a blood bank before a Tuesday deadline, offering donors a $20 Amazon gift card as a sweetener.
The Junior ROTC program at Center Line High School is hosting an American Red Cross blood drive from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on October 27. Registrations are open until that deadline. Interested donors can schedule an appointment by visiting RedCrossBlood.org and entering the sponsor code CENTERLINEHS, or by calling (800) RED CROSS. The event will take place in the school's dance studio at 26300 Arsenal St. Attendees should enter through the gymnasium door off the student parking lot.
The donation process requires 45 minutes to one hour of a donor's time. Staff noted that most of that duration is spent on mini physicals and health history checks. The actual blood draw takes only eight to 10 minutes.
The program is led by retired Sgt. Maj. John B. Koss and retired Sgt. Brian Kath. The unit currently consists of 130 students, including participants from other schools. JROTC is a military-regulated curriculum designed to teach leadership and citizenship. The collected blood will serve patients dealing with serious injuries, burns, surgeries, childbirth, anemia, blood disorders, cancer treatments, and heart issues.
The drive is part of the program's community service efforts. Donors who complete the procedure will receive their gift card via email. Further details are available at rcblood.org/scpromo.
